How Busy Parents Can Be More Focused And Productive In Their Job Search

As a full-time working parent, it is hard to fit in a job search. Here is how to achieve more focus and become more productive.

My client, a Customer Success Manager at a large healthcare company is feeling overworked in a job that isn’t a good fit for him. And the long hours are making matters even worse as it takes away from time to spend with his newborn.

His job search has been half-hearted and scattered. He is applying for roles he doesn’t really want just to get out of his current situation.

Here is what we worked on:

- Notice The Pattern: His unplanned and unfocused approach wasn’t just a function of how busy he was. This was a pattern his whole career. His fear of failure stopped him from going after what he wanted so he just hopped around to whatever job he could get.

- Change The Focus: He was so afraid of failing he chose not to work towards what he wanted. We changed his focus from thinking about failing to thinking about the next step. This became less scary.

- Build The Plan: Next we defined what small steps he would take and added them to his calendar. He now knows exactly what he needs to do and when despite his busy schedule.

Remember, we are all busy. Don’t use it as an excuse. Stop procrastinating, notice your fear, talk to someone who can help, and create a focused plan of action.
