It's hard to tell your career story when you are so close to it.
My client, a senior-level marketing executive, is ready for his next move but when he thinks about his diverse experience he gets lost in the details.
Here is how we clarified his story:
1. Focus on your audience. Get clear on the role and the type of company you want to work for.
2. Focus your message. Understand what is relevant to them. What are the problems they have that you can solve? What do they reveal about the role in the job description?
3. Edit your story. This is when it is helpful to get an objective third party to help you edit your career story. I was able to keep the relevant details and remove the rest.
He was too close to his story to edit it objectively.
